For those in the UK
Scam alert!!!!!
Just had a call purporting to be from the Telephone Preference Agency saying they're upgrading their service.
Apparently I will never get another nuisance call in my life!
Started checking details, address, postcode, did I pay by direct debit, was it due to expire in 2018 (wrong, they don't expire). At this point I started getting suspicious, since the TPA is free, but when he wanted to check the expiry date on 'one of my payment cards' I stopped cooperating and started asking why. He kept insisting so I told him he was becoming a nuisance call and hung up.
Rang the TPA and they confirmed it is scam originating outside the UK. They are looking into it but the numbers used keep changing, so difficult to pin down. My caller came up as 'number unavailable'.

There's a fake email going around purporting to be from the tax people.   It says if you click on a link you will get a large refund in a few days.   HM Revenue & Customs do not send emails; they send letters.

If you get a call from 01274 786501 just hang up.   It's a scammer.   Will probably tell you he's from BT.

Heads up **WARNING** I've just had a SCAM phone call telling me that £39.99 is being taken from my bank account for amazon prime? It said to cancel this transaction press "ONE" I know I don't have amazon prime so put the phone down and phoned amazon who confirmed it is a SCAM.
One person who did press "ONE" gave bank details and had £25,000 attempted to be taken from their bank account but! Luckily the bank stopped it to ask the owner if they had authorised it...
DON'T PRESS ONE... JUST PUT THE PHONE DOWN

Just received an email purporting to be from Paypal.   I checked with my Paypal account and there's nothing in it.   Wonder what would have happened if I had clicked on that link.

There's an email going around:   As part of the NHS promise to battle the Covid - 19 virus, HMRC has issued a payment of £258 as a goodwill payment.   Follow link to apply

It then gives you a link to click on.   Do not click on the link.   This is a scam.

And so it begins!.
‘Good Morning (At 1:30am)  I'm called from the NHS track and trace service, Sorry to wake you !!According to our system, you are likely to have been in close proximity to someone who has tested positive for COVID-19. This means that you now need to self-isolate for 7 days and take a COVID-19 test.'
'OK. Can you tell me who that person was?'
'I'm not able to tell you that. That is confidential information.'
'Right. Um... so ....'
'But you do need to be tested within the next 72 hours. So can I just get the best mailing address so that we can send a kit to you?'
'Ok (gives address)'
I just need to take a payment card so that we can finalize this and send the kit to you.'
'Sorry - a payment card? I thought this was all free?'
'No - I'm afraid not. There is a one-off fee of £50 for the kit and test results. Could you read off the long card number for me, please, when you're ready.'
'No - that's not right. This is part of the NHS so there's no charge.'
'I'm afraid there is. Can you give me the card number please - this is very important, and there are penalties for not complying.'
Puts the phone down.
This is how scammers work. And vulnerable people will fall for it.”
Don't fall for it.
