Pineapple and latex
09.10.09 at 19:24:59

Apologies if this has already been covered.... having had a latex allergy for a while now, I recently discovered that I needed to add pineapple to my list, having experienced anaphylaxis when eating it. Anyone else ever found a link to this fruit / plant? having done some reading on the web, I have seen that I may also need to be cautious with kiwi and papaya.

Hi Mel, Pineapple is well known to affect those with latex allergy. You should also be wary of melon, all large stoned fruits such as plums, cherries peaches etc., melon and its relatives such as cucumber and tomatoes. Some sufferers also react to apples and pears.

Thanks for that Bob, good to know that there is a link. I have also found that I react a little to kiwi as well and I know that others have mentioned this too.... interesting to read about.

Paula also has a reaction to Kiwi fruit Mal.   Apparently, reactions to fruit are not life threatening, just rather unpleasant.   Paula takes Zirtec for it.

Sadly though I ended up in hospital with anaphylactic shock having eaten some fresh pineapple!

I think that's a first Mel.   Never heard of anyone going into anaphylactic shock through fruit before.

Hi Everyone
Just to add my two penneths worth. Alex is type 1 and he also reacts to pineapple and did so as a baby with a rash like hives and an itchy mouth both fore runners of anaphylactic shock. As for people not having an anaphylactic shock to fruit, a friend of mine cannot go anywhere near kiwi or banana without ending up in hospital. So you are not alone, she was shocked to discover that these were both linked to latex allergy of which she knew nothing until Alex was diagnosed.
Thanks
Kathryn and Alex

Hi Kathryn and Alex,

Thanks for your post and good to know that I am not alone and an oddity!! Pineapple is a recent discovery for me and I was quite shocked (in more than one way!) to react so severely and so quickly. I have to say that my local hospital were brilliant with me and reassuringly it's a latex free hospital!

Keep away from the prickly fruit!

As this problem is something I've never come across before, I have alerted the LASG committee to the fact.

Sophie seems to eat pineapple without a problem mind you only the tinned version, would this make a difference?

Will keep an eye on her now.

Ann Clark replied as follows:

The most common cross sensitisation between latex and fruits is with banana.
Some people do have anaphylactic reactions.  Not everyone who has a latex
allergy has a problem with fruit.

The difference may be that the fruit had been cooked Karen.

I was told by the allergist that 'theoretically' all fruits causing oral allergy symptoms should be ok after they have been cooked, but I'm not sure this applies if you have full systemic reactions to the fruits?
Does anyone find cooking other fruits/veg help reduce the allergic effects?
