First Aid Courses
12.03.10 at 07:19:28

Has anyone had problems doing first aid courses.
I did the first part of a first aid course last saturday and have the second part tomorrow. When I got there I explained to the instructor my allergy and that I would not be able to touch the CPR dolls as I had previously had an allergic reaction to one after touching one when a different instructor reassured me that they were in no way rubber and in fact plastic needless to say he was wrong.Even after this chat she went to give me a CPR doll half way throught he course.
She informed me that even though I knew exactly how to perform CPR if I was not willing to ttouch the doll then i would not Pass the course.
My very angry manager then contacted the company who were responsible for the course who have since contacted her back and siad that I need to use a face sheild and gloves. I will not be doing this a s I feel being on the room is close enough contact for my liking.
I really don't think people understand the word allergy.  Angry

i think people become desensitised to the word allergy because of the amount of people saying they allergic to this an that.

what they dont understand is that them coming out in a mild rash due to using the wrong washing powder is not an allergy!!

And that our PROPER allergy  might actually kill us!!
Drives me mad!

oh and that the fact its hypoallergenic means that we can use it! when in fact it has nothing to do with being latex free!!

Moan over with! Grin

i was extremely lucky doing my first aid course as i point blank refused to touch it unless they came up with proof it was latex free.
they couldnt  so i improvised and the instructor was sypathetic.

Good luck tommorrow.

I did the second part of my course today and completly refused to touch the dummies. I told my instructor what I would do if I needed to, she told me she is happy with this but it is her boss that is not, she has promised me she will talk to someone above her boss on monday as she feels this is discrimation.
I have told her that if this does not work I will write a letter to them informing them i will be contacting my solicitors, as it is not equal opportunities. You would not expect a peanut allergy sufferer to touch a peanutwith their lips  through a mouth piece so why should I.
I am so annoyed that they will not give me a certificate, I have done the course which is mandatory as I work as deputy manager of a nursery and need it as part of my job.

Strange that.   Paula was a nursery manager.   Seems that a lot of nursery staff get latex allergy.   Probably down to latex gloves.

So sorry to hear that MP make sure you do something about it as it is definitely discrimination in my book.

You are so right I am fed up with people saying

'I am ALLERGIC to this that and the other when they have an intolerance. It is due to the word allergy being banding about so willy nilly that is part of the reason it is not taken as seriously as it should be. To make people understand I was told to say I have anaphylaxis to this that and the other and they seem to take it a bit more seriously - that is if they know what you are talking about

Take care all

Teddy thats exactly how i explain it to people.  Grin

i always say i am anaphalactic, then when they look at me in total confusion i say like the peanut allergy thatstops people breathing, latex does that to me! as most people tend to have some understanding of that lol

and i totally agree it is so discriminating that i think u should perserve with it until u get the right answers!

Hope u are all well
