Mom of Child with Possible Latex Allergy

Hi, I'm new to the forum.  I believe that my 5 year-old daughter has a latex allergy.  She used some computer headphones with rubber on them in school and broke out in hives around her ears.  I took her to the pediatrician, who was not very helpful and said that anything could have caused the rash.  I have since made an appointment to see a pediatric allergist.

After this I also realized that she has had small rashes on her tummy for the past several months off and on, and that this has perhaps been caused by the adjustable elastic waistband on her jeans.

I am quite anxious about the possibility of having a child with a latex allergy.  Can anyone offer any advice on what hidden latex to look out for?  How can I help my 5 little girl to be aware of latex in her environment, or do you have any other things that you think would help us?  I know to avoid balloons like the plague, bought her some latex-free pencils, but am rather clueless otherwise.

Our allergist appointment is on March 26.

Thank you so much!
Christy

Hi Christy

I am latex allergic so my children have to be latex free.  From the top of my head potentials in school will be:

gym equipment
school plimsols
school shoes soles
pens and pencils (esp those for infants which may have a pencil/pen grip which could be latex.
underwear elastic/elastic in other clothing
transfers on clothes (pictures etc which could be latex.)
Wellies
some toys esp things like balls
computer keyboards, mice and mouse mats.
elastic bands (my school are forever sending things home in the childrens bags with rubber bands around them.)
flooring esp safety flooring out in playgrounds.  One of my sons classrooms has a rubberised floor!!!!
sticky tape (sellotape is fine.)
certain glue (but most schools use pva - polyvinyl acetate which is not latex as it washes out of clothes.

At home things like mattresses, carpet backing etc.  If you look at the latex free list on the home page of the website that gives you an idea of the areas to be vigilant about.

Until you have it confirmed as latex allergy, try to keep her as far away from latex as you can but you could find it is something else eg the chemical setters etc in the rubber.  Friends of allergic children also have priton syrup in school with a list of what to do if their child comes upin a rash etc.

My biggest advice would be write a long list of everything you want to k now before the appointment as you are bound to get distracted or forget things and then come away and worry about them wishing you had asked.

Cheesy
Hello again,

Great news, my daughter had a blood test for latex allergy, and we got the results last week, she does NOT have a latex allergy.  She has pressure urticaria (hives caused by pressure).  So I am quite relieved for her.  I hope that manufacturers will discontinue the use of latex in their products, as it is unnecessary and there are many other viable alternatives that do not cause allergic reactions in individuals.  Even though we are not dealing with a latex allergy, I will purchase latex-free products whenever possible, as my small way of supporting manufacturers of latex-free products.  Thank you for your help, and I wish you and your loved ones all much health and wellness!

A relieved mom,
Christy
